In the 21st match of the sixth season of PSL played in Abu Dhabi, Multan Sultans won the toss and elected to bowl first against Peshawar Zalmi and achieved the target of 167 runs for the loss of two wickets.
Multan Sultans achieved their target in 16.3 overs for the loss of two wickets. Earlier, Peshawar Zalmi’s team had scored 166 runs in 20 overs for the loss of seven wickets. In pursuit of the target by the Sultans, opener Shaun Masood scored 14 runs and was caught by Kamran Akmal on the ball of Mohammad Irfan.
Rizwan remained unbeaten on 82 while Mohammad Shoaib scored 61 and was dismissed by Ameed Asif off Imran. Mohammad Imran and Mohammad Irfan picked one wicket each in that match. Earlier, Peshawar Zalmi scored 166 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs while the most successful bowler was Shahnawaz Dhani who took four wickets.
Peshawar Zalmi innings
Peshawar openers Kamran Akmal and Haider Ali started the innings with the aim of not losing a wicket. Kamran Akmal kept the pressure on Multan bowlers with the help of five fours but an easy catch was dropped by captain Mohammad Rizwan while capping.
Shoaib Malik could not score any runs and fell victim to Dhani. David Miller scored 22 runs. Rutherford scored 56 runs. Fabian Allen was run out for three. Roman Powell also scored just four runs when Rizwan dismissed him on Dhani’s hair. Thus, at the end of the power play, Peshawar’s opening batsmen crossed 50 runs.
But in the ninth over, Shahnawaz Dhani turned the tide when he bowled Kamran Akmal and then Shoaib Malik on two consecutive balls in the same over. Dhani took his third wicket in his next over by dismissing Haider Ali.
Before the match, Peshawar is third in the points table with eight points while Multan is fifth with four points. Multan gave a chance to Shaun Masood and Lessing Mazrbani but Peshawar came on the field with their winning XI.
Islamabad United won by 28 runs against Lahore Qalandars
Earlier in the first match on Sunday of PSL T20, Islamabad United defeated Lahore Qalandars by 28 runs. Chasing a target of 153, Lahore was all out for 126 in 18.2 overs. Apart from Fakhr Zaman, no batsman was able to bat on the crease.
Lahore lost seven wickets for just 14 runs after 86 runs for the loss of two wickets, which turned the match they won into a loss. The Islamabad bowlers kept up the pressure and made up for their poor batting performance. Mohammad Musa took three wickets while league spinners Shadab Khan and Fawad Ahmed took two wickets each.
Islamabad United scored 152 for seven in 20 overs in which Asif Ali played a key role by scoring 75 runs and was accompanied by Iftikhar Ahmed in the form of a partnership of 123 runs. Meanwhile, James Faulkner took three wickets while Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf took two wickets each.
Islamabad United half out for 20 runs
Batting first after winning the toss, Islamabad got off to a bad start, losing five wickets for just 20 runs. Lahore’s opening bowler Shaheen Afridi caused Islamabad’s first loss by catching Usman Khawaja off the wicketkeeper on his third ball. His late outswing kept the batsmen upset. On the next ball, he LBWed Rohail Nazir but could not get the wicket as he had nine balls.
But in the second over, James Faulkner noticed Rohail Nazir’s weakness and made him LBW. Colin Monroe also fell to Faulkner when an incoming ball LBWed him. Before the end of the power play, Hussain Talat tried to make a big shot on Faulkner’s ball but he was caught out in the square league. Haris Rauf caught captain Shadab Khan in his first over after the power play.
Thus, only half of Islamabad’s team was out for 20 runs. But then Iftikhar Ahmed and Asif Ali’s 123-run partnership helped Shadab XI. Asif Ali bravely faced the Lahore bowlers and scored a half-century off just 28 balls. Ben Dunk missed an opportunity to get him out on Rashid Khan’s ball when the ball got out of his hand while stopping.
Asif Ali finally hit 75 off 43 balls with the help of five sixes and was hit by Shaheen Afridi while Iftikhar Ahmed could not complete his half-century and was sent back to the pavilion by Haris Rauf for 49 runs. In this way, Asif and Akhtar got their team out of difficult situations and gave them a good target of 153 runs.
U-turn of a good start in Lahore
Lahore had a good start chasing the target of 153 runs but later the game changed completely. Lahore openers Fakhar Zaman and captain Sohail Akhtar scored 55 runs in the power play. But then league sniper Fawad Ahmed sent Sohail Akhtar back to the league with an individual score of 34.
Zeeshan Ashraf, the third-ranked batsman in the next over, was run out after scoring just one run. Fakhar Zaman remained on the crease but Mohammad Musa caught Mohammad Hafeez on the first ball of the 11th over while playing a pull shot which was Lahore’s third wicket to fall. Ben Dunk could not stay on the crease for long and was dismissed by Mohammad Musa.
The fifth batsman to be dismissed was Fakhr Zaman, who caught Musa’s bouncer aggressively at 44 off the boundary. Tim David and Rashid Khan fell victim to Islamabad captain Shadab Khan. Soon after, the wickets of Shaheen Afridi, James Faulkner, and Harris Rauf also fell.
With an increase of 14 runs, Lahore lost seven wickets and the team was all out for 126 runs and lost the match. After this victory, the team of Islamabad United has come first in the points table.
