Asghar Afghan was again removed from the leadership of Afghanistan due to the loss of the Test match against Zimbabwe. He was replaced by middle-order batsman Hasmatullah Shahidi as Afghanistan’s new captain in the Test and ODI format. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed the matter in a statement.

In a statement on Shahidi’s appointment as the new captain, the ACB said, “Shahidi has been made the captain of the national team in Test and ODI format instead of Asghar. Rahmat Shah will act as his deputy. The name of the captain of the T20 team will be announced soon. However, Rashid Khan will be the co-captain in the short version. ‘

The ACB said in a statement that Asghar, who led Afghanistan in four Tests, 59 ODIs and 52 Twenty20s, had been removed from the captaincy. The investigation has revealed that Afghanistan lost to Zimbabwe in the first Test due to some decisions made by Afghanistan as the captain of the team. ‘

The two-match Zimbabwe-Afghanistan series ended in a 1-1 draw last March. The Afghans lost the first Test by 10 wickets. However, they won the second Test by 6 wickets. Shahidi became the first player in the country to score a double-century in that Test. His unbeaten 200 off 443 balls with 21 fours and 1 six came from his bat. His performance is thought to have played a key role in the board’s decision-making.

On the other hand, losing Asghar’s leadership is nothing new. Gulbadin Naib was sacked by the ACB two months before the 2019 World Cup. However, despite getting a new captain, the Afghans could not win a single match in the World Cup. Gulbadin was later removed and Rashid Khan was made the captain of three formats. However, seven months after losing the captaincy, Asghar regained the lead. In the second phase, his leadership lasted for 15 months.
